Hello Scouters:

Just a reminder of our great resource we have in Camp Mohawk.  It is there for you and your scouts too use.  Right in town.  As with everything some work needs to be done from time to time.  Camp Mohawk is no different.  We need some groups or sections to do some clean up.  Garbage picked up, brush to clean up etc.  If you can help out please let me know and we can work out the details.

Now that the Scout Shop is no longer operating, there is less activity at Scout House during the day.  However, we have noted that there has been undocumented access to the building of which we were not aware since there was nothing booked on the calendar.

The Scout House is an important resource to all Scouting members in North Waterloo.  We want to ensure that it is there for you when you need it and book it.

If you wish to book a room for a meeting or an activity be sure to visit the booking page on the NWA website. http://northwaterloo.scouter.ca/book-scout-house.htm

Further, it has been some time since the code has been changed on the lock-box that holds the entrance door key.  As an extra security measure, the code has been changed.  If you require the lock-box code, it will be provided when your booking is confirmed.  Please do not share the code with others unless absolutely necessary.  We trust that you appreciate the security reason.

If you need the code on an on-going basis, please call Bob Kalbfleisch at 519-572-1112 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Remember, Scout House is a valuable resource for all of us.  There are just a few common sense rules that will make your use of the facilities enjoyable and enjoyable for the next user:

  • It takes everyone to be respectful to ensure we all enjoy our Scout House.
  • Please leave Scout House neat and tidy, or better yet, please leave it better than you may have found it.
  • Scout House is cleaned once a week. Therefore,  it requires everyone's cooperation so that all Scout House users have a positive Experience.
  • Always put the lockbox numbers Back to all zeros when leaving. Make sure that all doors are locked and lights turned off - upstairs and washrooms. The stair lights can be left on for safety if you wish.
  • Do not ever share the lockbox code unless in emergency.
  • Booking courtesy:
    •  If you have made a booking and for some reason you no longer require it, please let The Webmaster know so the booking can be cancelled and made available for another group to use.
    • Only book what room or rooms you will be actually using.

Our Troop has indicated they would like to try a hot tent this winter.  We have 11 youth and 3 Scouters but may link up with another small Troop.  We may have access to a 10 man tent but no stove.

Does anyone have either a stove we could borrow or a large hot tent with stove we can borrow?

The Oktoberfest Parade Food Drive has been very impressed with the Scouts and leaders that have been helping collect food along the parade route  for these many years.  We are looking for volunteers.
We would need approximately 15 + Leaders, Rovers, Ventures  and 30 + youth in total (Scouts some older Cubs - it is a pretty good pace) to work the entire event or lesser numbers could still work a couple of trucks.

The parade is Monday October 10, 2016.   The event runs from about 7:45 AM until the end of the parade (10:30 AM if you are at the front – 11:30 AM if you are at the back).  There are two trucks at the front and one truck at the back.
The route is approximately 5 KM long.  This year because of the LRT construction it is starting In Kitchener and ending at Bridgeport and Weber in Waterloo.
The leaders / adults  would be in the trucks putting collected food in the bins.
The youth would be pushing shopping carts along the route collecting donations and bringing them to the truck to be loaded.
It qualifies for community service for their badge work and is actually a lot of fun.  Anyone interested in participating a can contact me for more information.

It is also a wonderful opportunity to show Scouting in the community.

We’re still looking for volunteers to help with our display at the Canada Day Celebration at Columbia Lake this year.  This is a fantastic opportunity for community outreach and recruiting new members.  Due to space limitations, the low-rise rope bridge we had planned is out and our activity will be small table-top games.  If you have any appropriate activities to bring, please let us know.  We also need volunteers from area groups to help set up and supervise the activity.  The site opens to the public at 4:00pm, and ends at 8:00pm.  Fireworks will follow at the end of the night.

If you are able to help out for 1 or 2 hours to set up or host the activities, please let us know ASAP.

North Waterloo is  going back to the Canada Day Celebration at Columbia Lake this year.  This is a fantastic opportunity for community outreach and recruiting new members.  We’ve settled on doing a low-rise rope bridge as a hands-on activity for attendees to cross.  If groups have materials appropriate for building a rope bridge that they could loan for the day, we would appreciate it.  We also need volunteers from all area groups to help set up and supervise the activity.  The site opens for set up at 8:00am on July 1st, with the site opening to the public at 4:00pm, and activities closing up at 8:00pm.  Fireworks will follow at the end of the night.

Fellow Scouters,

A small group of our Scouts will be going to Algonquin Park July 16 to 23. My co-leader has been assigned to Vancouver for the summer and the Parent helper starts a new position on July 1st so he is now unavailable. In the result I need a leader to assist and be in conformity with the two deep policy. We will be camping on Little Doe Lake and will be going to B-P Lake on a day excursion. Our group committee covers all expenses for the leaders. I would be grateful for assistance. Paddling experience a necessity.

December 1, 2015

Good evening,

You've all heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but have you heard of Giving Tuesday? Giving Tuesday was created as a national day of giving to kick start the holiday season. This Giving Tuesday (December 1st), Scouts Canada is encouraging individuals to donate to the No One Left Behind program. As such, all social media efforts leading up to and on Giving Tuesday have been designed to promote the great experience of Scouting and the benefits of the No One Left Behind program.

To reach the widest audience possible and to ensure our success this Giving Tuesday, we need your assistance!

How can you help? Scouts Canada will be posting a series of messages about the NOLB program leading up to, and on, Giving Tuesday. We will also be retweeting and sharing members' posts related to Giving Tuesday and NOLB. We ask that you retweet and share Scouts Canada's messages and develop social media messages of your own to share with your networks, which Scouts Canada can then retweet and share! The official hashtags should be included in all Giving Tuesday and NOLB messaging and content disseminated. They are: #GivingTuesdaySC and #NOLB.

To find out more about the No One Left Behind program or to make a donation visit: http://www.scouts.ca/ca/no-one-left-behind

Here are the various ways one can give: http://www.scouts.ca/ca/ways-give

Keep an eye out for videos that we will be sharing to promote giving on Giving Tuesday, as well an infographic about NOLB (http://www.scouts.ca/nolb/NOLB-infographic.pdf), banners and testimonials which you can share!

Thank-you in advance for all of your efforts and assistance with this. If you have any questions regarding the Giving Tuesday social media strategy please feel free to contact me.

 Many thanks,

 Rebecca

Hi

Our Scout group helps with annual parade food drive and we could use some help collecting food.

Community Service × 3h

Hike (by km) × 5km

Date: October 12, 2015 (7:45am - 11:00am)

Location: Weber and King Street Kitchener Waterloo

Description

Once again we are participating in the Food Drive at the Oktoberfest Parade. The route is approximately 5 KM long. This year because of the LRT construction it is a new Route Starting at Cedar Street In Kitchener and ending at Bridgeport and Weber in Waterloo. The leaders / adults would be in the trucks putting collected food in the bins. The youth would be pushing shopping carts along the route collecting donations and bringing them to the truck to be loaded. You will be responsible for dropping your youth off at the beginning of the parade route and picking them up at the end of the parade route. We can call you when we get to the end if need be and as always if you can car pool and share pick up and drop off and pick up that is great.

It qualifies for community service for their badge work and is actually a lot of fun. I have enabled the sign up for this event. Please let us know if your child is attending as soon as possible.

URGENT….URGENT...URGENT

North Waterloo Area's Scout Shop STILL needs your help.

Thank you to those of you who have come forward to support the operation of our Scout Shop.

BUT WE STILL NEED EXTRA VOLUNTEERS!!!!!

Michelle‎ Coyle, our new store Manager advises that business has been more than busy. This means moms, dads and Scouters are not receiving the level of service to the high standard Michelle is striving to provide.

Please give consideration to offering some of your volunteer time to assist Michelle, and more importantly, please share this request among your Scouting colleagues and scouting parents.

The continuing success of our Scout Shop requires the help and participation of dedicated volunteers. Retail sales experience is an asset but not a requirement. In addition to floor sales, Michelle can use help with tasks such as shelf stocking and inventory control.   SCOUTERS: THIS CAN BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR SENIOR SCOUTS AND VENTURERS WHO ARE LOOKING TO MEET THEIR SCHOOL VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENT.

Our scout shop hours are:

  • Thursdays‎, 12:00 noon to 8:00pm
  • Fridays, 12:00 noon to 8:00pm
  • Saturdays, 9:00am to‎ 1:00pm

Please email Michelle at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will contact you.

As you know, the strength of Scouts Canada is the commitment of volunteers.  ‎Our Scout Shop really needs you!

 Fall Forestry Day Event
The Annual Forestry Day event is Saturday Nov 7, 2015 from 8:30 am until 3:30pm.  Lunch and snacks will be served.
Please RSVP to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  with numbers in your group at least 1 week before.
Age appropriate for Scouts, Venturers, Rover and Adults. Groups are welcome to camp for the weekend.
Dress of the weather: work footwear advised.  Gloves, Eye and ear protection are available: bringing your own is recommended.

What’s new at Everton:
Check out the North Gate (aka Scout Gate): Thanks to 1st Hope for staining the fence, a volunteer group from Economical Insurance employees who cleared all the brush and cut down the weeds; and finally the Camp Rangers for the makeover of the original “Everton Scout Forest” and the sign “Only god can make a tree” Kilmer.

Adirondack 4 has a new twin!
Single Adirondacks are #1, #5, #6 and #11. All of the other sites now have double Adirondacks.
Thanks to the many groups who helped the Rangers build these over the past few years.  Everton now has a total of 14 Adirondacks available:
Great for lightweight camping, no tents to dry after, enjoying the outdoors in all season.

Safety First:
Everton has thousands of trees and maintaining them property is key. We still have work to complete as a result of the December 2013 ices storm.
Most of the remaining damage is well off trails and away from sites and buildings. So many helped us in this clean up…with our loudly shared THANKS!
We saw a need to manage the risk around chainsaws and their safety. Scouts Canada issued policy that needed us to follow.
We graduated 9 more Scouters in June who spent the weekend with us for a chainsaw safety course.
Participants completed training in safety, first aid readiness, maintenance, cutting methods and techniques.

Grand River Cabin
Grand River has a new lease on life. The foundation piers were either replaced or straightened last fall and this past spring. The cabin was stained and re roofed last year.
And most recently the interior got a fresh coat of paint to brighten up the interior…check it out on your next visit.

Heasley:
Tucked away in the trees across the river Heasley Hut has a new look. Heasley now has a large open area where groups could tent near the cabin or in combination with Adirondack 10 and 10A.
Take advantage of a slightly more challenging site as Scouts improve their skills along the new Canadian Path that they can take across the Swinging Bridge or Stepping stones…
Mother nature provided this opportunity with substantial damage from the ice storm, so we turned it into an area ideal for camping.

Parking & Trails,
Everton permits parking in one of two lots. The north gate is the wooden gate and the Wheeler gate is the other lot.
PLEASE instruct parents to park and stay in of the two lots until all your group arrives.
We do not allow driving to buildings for several reasons:
There are no parking lots at winter use buildings.
We plow snow off the trails but they are not salted or sanded.
Ice, snow, steep slopes, trees, wetlands, the river all pose risk to drivers and other camp users.
Driver lack of knowledge of the layout of the camp is a huge problem.
We hope personal safety of all is understood and Rangers don’t drive our own 4x4’s so neither will you.

Trailers: We provide 4 open trailers to carry group gear to buildings and our tractors will assist you. You will pack and load and we will make a trip to your site.
If you bring a group trailer we will bring it to your site from the parking lot and haul it out Sunday when you leave.
We strongly suggest you plan what gear you really need based on meals and activities you have planned and your gear and food are in reasonable sturdy containers.

We are happy to assist so you and the youth can enjoy Everton in all seasons!

Kevin Donovan
North Waterloo Area Property Manager

1st Waterloo is hosting a Wilderness and Remote First Aid course at Camp Shegardaynou at the weekend of 25 - 27 September.  The course will be taught by Laura and Mike MacNeil, owners of LMac Community CPR of London.

I have taken this course from Laura and Mike in the past and I found it to be one of the best First Aid courses I've ever done.  I would gladly recommend both the course and the instructors.

There are ten spaces available on the course.  I'd like to offer them around North Waterloo Area.  Obviously the invitation is there for adult volunteers and Rovers.  I'd also invite Venturers (with their parents' consent).  I would also consider having Scouts but I'd want to speak with their Troop Scouter before giving a final yes or no on that one.  Spaces will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

The course will cost $160.00 for the weekend, which includes the cost of tenting at Shegardaynou (bring your own tent), food and course materials.  Current Standard First Aid with CPR certification is a pre-requisite for the course.

Anyone who is interested in participating should reply to me (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) not later than 18 September.

On a related note, I'm also looking for one or two volunteers to quartermaster for the course.  We will purchase and provide the food; we just need someone to see to cooking it and tidying up after meals.  If no one steps up, a couple of us from 1st Waterloo who are taking the course will also look after those chores, but that will make it harder for us to learn.

Thanks,

Eric Durham

Troop Scouter
